Buses, routes and fares · Jamaica

Every route on the island, and it works with no signal

Rooky is a transit app for Jamaica. Timetables, real fares and walking directions, all stored on the phone so it works in the places where the bus actually is.

What it does

  1. 1

    Works with no signal

The whole timetable is thirty-eight megabytes on your phone. No signal needed, which matters because the places you need a bus are the places with no signal.

  2. 2

    Real fares, not estimates

Fares are collected from operators and checked by users, with the date each was last confirmed shown next to it. An unconfirmed fare says so.

  3. 3

    Tells you where to stand

Walking directions to the stop with a photograph of it, because half the stops on this island are a tree and an understanding.

  4. 4

    Says when it is wrong

When a route is unverified for more than sixty days the app tells you, rather than presenting stale data as fact.

What leaves your phone

Your location never leaves the device. That is not a setting, it is the architecture

Route matching happens on the phone against the offline timetable, so there is nothing to send.

Rooky asks for location once, uses it locally to work out which stop you are near, and sends nothing anywhere. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising identifier and no crash reporter that uploads by default. The only thing that ever leaves the phone is a fare correction, and only when you tap the button that says so.

It works in Portland where nothing else does. The timetable is already on the phone.
Reported a wrong fare on Tuesday, in the app the following Monday.
Nine dollars a year for students with no verification service. Thank you.
Thirty-eight megabytes is a lot on an old phone. Worth it.
No account needed and location never leaves the device.
Fares show the date they were last confirmed. Nobody else does that.
Live updates only work where the operator provides them, which is not everywhere.
The whole dataset is free to download. They mean the open part.

Before you install it

Data, coverage, accuracy and what the paid tier actually adds.

Does it work without signal?
Yes, entirely. The whole timetable is thirty-eight megabytes on the phone. Only live running updates on the paid tier need a connection, and everything else works without one.
What data do you collect?
Almost none. Location is used on the device and never transmitted. There is no analytics SDK and no advertising identifier. The only thing that ever leaves the phone is a fare correction you have deliberately sent.
Is the free tier a trial?
No, it is permanent. Routes, timetables, fares, stop photographs and walking directions are free for ever. The paid tier adds live updates and journey history.
How accurate are the fares?
Each fare shows the date it was last confirmed. Anything over sixty days old is flagged in the app as unverified rather than presented as fact.
Do I need an account?
Not for the free tier. For Rooky Plus it is an email address and nothing else — no name, no telephone number, no social login.
Can I get the data?
Yes, all of it, free and openly licensed. If somebody builds a better app with it that is a good outcome for people trying to catch a bus.
Which operators are included?
Eleven send us timetables directly and the rest are compiled from published schedules and user corrections. The release notes list every route added, with its source.
